Hi there,
Yes, I made it to Bali last Thursday night. Kind of a rough landing in Kuta. Sandy picked me up at the airport for a pricey $10 to go such a short distance. I didn't find him to be all that friendly, but do know he was very exhausted beyond exhaustion. He took me to this out of the way rooming place where the lady there had a bad pushy negative attitude. Needless to say, I just walked off for a half hour and had a taxi help me find a room just off Poppies 1. Kuta is a terrible dive and I will tell anyone going to Bali thier 1st time to never go to Kuta off the plane or early in their trip as it's a terrible introduction to Bali; head str8 to Ubud. I checked into a hotel off of Poppies 1 lane and they shoved that KFC American stuff up my rear by calling KFC delivery on me with them knocking on the door 10 minutes after I checked in just as I was trying to get a shower. They had a printed ticket with my room number. Then the hotel guys knocked 5 minutes later to tell me I must pay for the chicken I ordered and that just about did it for me. I refused. I stayed 2 nights and they just knocked in the mornings at 9 and 10am asking if I were staying another day. The worst Balinese go live and work in Kuta. "Boss man!!! Hey boss man!"
Ubud is cool, but they do need to fix the darned slabs that compose the footpaths over the drainages as it's dangerous with many broken/fallen in and others about to break.I don't see why they can't fix this problem with such a booming tourist industry going. And for Christsakes, they need to establish a taxi licensing system sponsoring official licensed car, van, and motorcycle taxis so you can rest assured you have a qualified driver with enough skill. Not everyone trying to do mototaxi has enough skill. I almost got killed today on a motorbike due to the driver not having enough skill to handle it. He was killing the bike at intersections and having trouble restarting due to not understanding how to put it in neutral as he borrowed it from his friend. He was struggling to handle it in traffic. I was out in Tegalkungin village NE of Ubud going back to town. Just anyone tries to do anything to make money and often friends help each other so motorbikes get around as well as god only knows what else.
Wow, these kids outside of tourist areas such as rice paddies and villages just go, "money money money," and just demand it. I had to tell them to not be greedy, stop acting like this, and to have patience to get big enough to work. Seems very good for couples, but more challenging if going alone since single male tourists attract the conmen like a magnet as well as all the annoying touting and questioning. I can't count how many times I've been offered drugs, prostitutes, even a hand gun, and aggresively grabbed with intimidation, but Ubud is not nearly as bad as Kuta and Legian. Bali is a very exhausting place to visit. I can't say I am all that impressed with Bali people; just the arts, because they act like a friend, talk to you for too long with too many personal questions, and then raise price unexpectably such as with a trekking guide today. And when you speak the truth about a deal or situation, they try to act like they are not listening such as when I corrected the off the street guide that $40 is too much after we agreed upon $15 for the 3 hours of jungle walking. He walked me through the jungle acting like my friend to a village and then made it where transport was unavailable until I just started walking off without paying anything as he wouldn't take the $15. He wanted $40. Bastards. He got 200,000 rph which included the aweful motorbike ride.
Thanks for all the info you shared. Thanks for sharing your videos. I guess Bali is not for me as I can't trust anyone as they just lie to me most of the time and often act too agressive and rude. Better for couples. :) How in the world are they called the warmest people in the world? I am baffled stir crazy by many making this comment on the internet as it's not my experience. Thier music and art is facinating and beautiful as well as thier island itself, but that's it. Of course, I only met a sampling of sales people, touts, shop keepers, restaurant people, and such, but the real Balinese in the rice paddies and villages do seem tolerant and mellow.
